End Of Summer

August 30 – September 29, 2018

An agitation of the air,
A perturbation of the light.
(Stanley Kunitz – End of summer)

For most of us summer means vacation, therefore making it the most awaited season: good weather, plenty of sunlight, lots of fruits and vegetables or barbecue and beer, depending on one’s preference. Usually there’s one question that comes up: the seaside or the mountains? Regardless of the designated holiday destination, Romanians love rituals, and the summer vacation is almost like a pilgrimage towards self-care, which many mistake for self-indulgence.

The end of summer brings an end to vacation, marking a return to normality, back to work or school, basically back to responsibilities.

The usual reports vary from positive – how nice the weather was, how crowded the resorts were, what to wear, what to eat and drink – to negative – statistics of emergency calls caused by heat, inebriation or gluttony, and, last but not least, traffic jams and accidents. In Bucharest, the end of summer also brought unexpected violence at the protests against corruption: a protest that started peaceful ended in chaos, with people being pushed back with water cannons and tear gas.

The exhibiting artists approach the title literally, and their recent artworks and site-specific installations reflect the inspiration and ways of filtering information about current events.

The three artist received the Lateral ArtSpace Award in the Expo Marathon Exhibition Competition ★ The Young Art Marathon, which takes place every year in May at the University of Art and Design in Cluj.
